Eating more fruits and veggies? That’s great for your heart – and your waistline – but fresh produce can hide germs that make you sick. A little bit of preparation can help you avoid nasty foodborne illness and get the full benefits of all the vitamins, minerals and fiber found in fresh fruits and veggies. Try the following tips to prevent produce problems:
* Wash all fruits and veggies with tap water just before you eat them.
* Scrub firm produce (i.e. melons) with a vegetable brush in addition to rinsing.
* Throw away the outer leaves on a head of lettuce.
* Cut away bruised or damaged spots on fresh produce.
* Cook raw sprouts before you eat them.

With just a little preparation, it’s easy to safely enjoy healthy and seasonal fresh food!
