The Cost of a Child

How much does it cost to rear a child today? The USDA just released their annual “Expenditures on Children by Families” report, finding that a middle-income family with a child born in 2011 will spend about $234,900 for food, shelter and other necessities over the next 17 years. Housing is the biggest expense, followed by child care, education and food. Annual costs, depending on the age of the child, range from $12,290 to $14,320.    (photo credit: Heidi Peoples)
